Hervé a vu exécuter sa mère en prison, au Congo. Beaucoup d’enfants maintenant s’affilient à des bandes pour ne pas en devenir la cible. Herve passa deux semaines à l’hôpital. Le jeune Latino fut poursuivi mais, quand Herve and Beatrice (qui ne connaît que fort peu d’anglais) furent convoqués au Tribunal, ils ne purent s’y rendre parce qu’ils ignoraient où l’audience avait lieu et parce qu’une dame, censée venir les prendre et les conduire, arriva trop tard au rendez-vous. Ils se rendirent au Tribunal le lendemain, mais il était trop tard pour qu’on les entende. . Le jeune Latino ne subit qu’une peine légère. Les deux étudiants firent l’objet d’une mesure de renvoi temporaire de (?) jours. Herve et sa famille trouvèrent toute cette situation injuste. Personne ne se manifesta pendant qu’il était à l’hôpital, ni le directeur de l’école, ni . Deux ans plus tard, Herve, qui circulait en voiture avec son amie noire américaine remarqua le garçon Latino dans la rue . Le Latino se moquait de lui. En conséquence, Herve sortit de sa voiture et le frappa. Ils se battirent et Hervé lui porta des coups sévères.
